I met Kevin a little over 2 1/2 years ago and within a couple of days, both my sister and I affectionately nicknamed him “our brother from another mother!” Kevin lived across the street from our ailing uncle, Richard Stone, who, along with our grandmother Dorotha Stone, were neighbors of Kevin’s parents on Plaza Drive decades earlier as I recall.
Uncle Dick ( what we called Richard) passed away in July 2016 and often mentioned Kevin in emails and phone calls. He told us Kevin would take him to doctor appointments, do simple and not so simple odd jobs and repairs for him occasionally, get his paper and mail and look in on him. Since I live in Virginia and my sister in Northern INdiana, we were very appreciative of Kevin’s kindness and, secretly, hoped our uncle wasn’t a burden to him as our uncle’s health declined. Actually, we started to wonder if “this Kevin” ever existed since every time she and I were in Jeff, Kevin wasn’t home. (Of course when we finally did meet, i discovered he was most likely on the river or in his boat, fishing with friends)
In the months before Uncle Dick died, we started getting phone calls and text messages from Kevin keeping us abreast of his health, and eventually, notified us after our uncle died from complications from surgery. My sister Cathy and I were so very grateful for Kevin’s communications and watchful eye on our uncle.
When I flew to Jeffersonville to take care of my uncle’s estate after he passed, I walked across the street and finally met Kevin in person. OMG! We hit it off immediately and both cried and comforted each other. He recounted my uncle’s last days in detail, right down to his final trip to the ice cream shop to bring my uncle a late night snack. Kevin opened up his home to me during that week and then a few months later when I returned.
More importantly, he opened up his heart and shared sooooo many stories about my uncle , who he always called “ Mr. Stone.” I learned that my uncle had lots of friends he’d met through Kevin, and yes, I soon met Rex and Barry - who also had lots of stories about my uncle!! Thanksgiving dinners together, gift exchanges at Christmas and birthdays, the extensive history of the Habenero pepper (and each had their own special recipe.)One nihjt, I literally cried streams of tears after eating one of Barry’s peppers..... or was it Rex’s??? All I remember is Kevin and the gang all laughing as we sat around his dining table. I soon discovered that my uncle was never a burden to his awesome neighbor Kevin and his buddies Barry and Rex. No, my uncle was their friend.
Thank you Kevin for just being you. Friends like you are quite a find- I wish I could’ve met you when my uncle was alive. I can’t imagine the loss your family and friends must be feeling. Thankfully, we all have memories to cherish and ease our pain. ‘Til we meet again, my brother from another mother! I know “Mr. Stone” will be surprised but happy to see you. Love you man!
