Norman Elam II

Obituary of Norman Walter Elam II

Norman Walter Elam II

76; New Albany, IN

Norman Walter Elam II, 76, of New Albany, IN passed away on Friday, June 21, 2019 at his home surrounded by his beloved family and dogs. Legacy Funeral Center has been entrusted with his cremation.

Norman was a hard worker and provider for his family, and rarely missed work before his retirement in 2002.  His last job was as an over-the-road truck driver for Pegasus Transportation in Louisville, KY.  He also worked as a salesperson, restaurant manager, bartender, carpenter, and was a member of Laborers Local 576.  Norman was a proud veteran of the Air Force and the Vietnam War; he was honorably discharged in 1964.  He was a passionate lover of animals, and always had pets in his home.  His family and those who knew him well will tell you, he never knew a stranger.  As well as having a gift for sharing his story with others, he had a curiosity about other people and loved hearing their viewpoints.  He was respectful and kind to others, even when he disagreed with their perspective.  Norman spent as much time with his family as he could; telling stories, sharing his sense of inquisitiveness, laughing, playing, and enjoying life!  His spirit will be carried on by the children and family members he held so dear.

Norman is preceded in death by his parents, Opal Carmine Elam and Norman Elam, Sr; and his grandparents: Shelby Smith Elam, Brenda Davis Elam, Layfayette Carmine and Minnie Asher Carmine.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Glenda Elam; daughters, Debra Ann Keffer (Clay), Brenda Lynn Elam-Huff (Jeffrey Hillard), and Brenda Marie Elam; son, Norman Elam III (Nikki); four grandsons, seven granddaughters, two great grandchildren, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws.

The family will be holding a private memorial service in their home on July 6 to honor his memory.  The family has designated the Wounded Warrior Project for memorial contributions.  To leave a condolence for the family, please visit www.legacyindiana.com.
